At the beginning of Little Women, Jo is described as having a “gentlemanly” manner, which includes using slang words and whistling with her hands in her pockets like a boy. Jo is a funny, clever tomboy with a wild, strong-willed personality, an “unladylike” temper, and a burning ambition to be a writer. If Little Women has a rebellious, feminist spirit, it’s contained in the character of Jo March. Alcott’s well-rounded portrayal, however, of imperfect women-particularly ambitious, independent tomboy Jo-as well as her notable resistance to the conventional “marriage plot” of her time, have afforded the novel a long-lasting, if conflicted, relationship to feminist thought.
